Relax during couples' week at Free Rein Ranch

Free Rein Guest Ranch in British Columbia, Canada, is all about letting you do what you wish, when you wish - whether that's horseback riding, bathing in secluded lakes, picnicing by the shoreline or simply enjoying a snooze in the shade. For a romantic ranch getaway, the best time to visit is in October, when Free Rein waves goodbye to the kids and dedicates the entire month to adults, meaning a quieter and more intimate atmosphere. As the nights start to draw in, drinking, partying and long lie-ins become more commonplace that action-packed days, so if you're looking for true relaxation and the freedom to do what you choose, this is the ranch to come to.

Kick back during Couples Bootcamp at Alisal

Also in October, Alisal Guest Ranch in California, USA, will play host to 'Couples Bootcamp'. From October 18 to 21, 2012, treat your other half to daily horseback rides, breakfast rides to the historic old Adobe, nightly entertainment, and all meals including gourmet wine dinners and a special lakeside dinner. The two of you will also enjoy a moonlight hay ride, romantic turn-down gifts and, of course, plenty of time for relaxing in each other's company.

Head to Vista Verde Ranch in Colorado, USA, and enjoy the privacy of your own private log cabin and private dining opportunities. Dining at Vista Verde is a real treat, with wine an integral part of the dining experience and Executive Chef, Matt Campbell, leading wine tastings and cookign classes.

Three Bars Ranch in British Columbia, Canada, offers wonderful spa facilities if you or your other half want a pampering ranch vacation. Here, high season for couples is concentrated more in spring and fall, so visit at these times of year for a more intimate and adult-oriented dude ranch vacation.

The Resort at Paws Up in Montana, USA, offers first-class service and luxurious accommodations. Think gourmet cuisine, couples' spa treatments, personalized service, and amenities such as heated bathroom floors, rain showers, organic spa products and hot tubs. Romantic accommodations don't get better than private luxury homes and luxury tents, and with the ranch staff's attentive, anticipatory service, first-class hospitality is guaranteed at Paws Up.

Siwash Lake Ranch in British Columbia, Canada, is a small, private and truly intimate hideaway perfect for a romantic ranch retreat. Enjoy private fine dining, couples' massages magically delivered in the woods under canvas, and private horseback rides. Luxury safari camp at Clayoquot Wilderness Resort

Another British Columbia luxury Canada guest ranch is Clayoquot Wilderness Resort, Top50's only luxury tented safari camp. Just like Prince William whisked Kate off on a safari adventure to pop the question, you can treat the love of your life to the ultimate romantic safari setting. Privacy is ensured in your own luxury tent complete with King bed, full en-suite bathroom with double sinks, heated floors, and indoor and outdoor showers. Take guided wiildlife safaris to see orca whales, sea otters and black bears, then relax back at the ranch with a couples massage and private 5-course meal.

Elk Mountain Ranch in Colorado, USA, might be a family ranch, but visit in September for adult weeks and you'll experience a much more intimate and relaxed atmosphere, thanks to a reduced guest capacity and an emphasis is on riding and relaxing. Think romantic trail ride cookouts, champagne brunches and a country candlelight dinner, as well as massages and hot tub facilities.

The Castle Room Suite at Estancia Ranquilco

For a more exotic romantic ranch vacation, head south to Argentina where adventure at Estancia Ranquilco awaits. Head out into the romantic wilderness for a pack trip into the mountains for all or part of your stay, or base your entire stay at the beautiful estancia where you'll have your own 'wing' of the stone lodge. We recommend The Castle Room suite, boasting a raised double bed offering amazing views of the river canyon below, and French doors to your private stone patio overlooking the river and mountains where you can enjoy private meals. When night draws in, cozy up in the adjoining sitting room by the stone fireplace complete with natural “heart” stones from the area, with a glass of Argentine Malbec. Sumptuous meals can be enjoyed out on the terrace with sweeping views of the Trocoman River or, for a more romantic setting, silver-service style with crystal and fine china in the dining room.

Valentine's Day can be less than fun when you're single, what with couples going all gooey-eyed over each other, your loved-up friends rambling on about their Valentine's Day plans and people asking what you're doing for the big day. There's still time to book yourself a Top50 dude ranch vacation for the Valentine's week - after all, there's no better place for lone travelers to take vacation than a western ranch.

Dude ranch vacations are a wonderful way to meet new people and whether you visit a luxury dude ranch, authentic guest ranch or real working ranch, you will never feel lonely. The unique welcoming and inclusive environment that only dude ranch vacations can provide means you will feel like part of the family and make life-long friends - horses included! The welcoming atmosphere is extended through all ranch activities, from camp-outs and cattle drives to mealtimes, where, on many of the smaller and more intimate ranches, everyone dines together family-style around the dining table.

Romantic ranch vacations: a man's guide to Valentine's Day

Romantic ranch vacations are exactly what every girl wants for Valentine's. Guys, just forget that box of chocolates (come on, a little imagination here), that necklace you saw (jewelry is VERY personal taste - trust us, we won't like it), that oversized teddy bear all men seem to think girls love (we threw away our childhood collection of soft toys for a reason). No, give her something she'll remember forever. A once-in-a-lifetime experience you can remind her of every time you argue - yup, bring up that romantic dude ranch vacation you took her on and you'll have the last word every time. The bonus? You get to unleash that inner John Wayne that's always lurked beneath the surface...

So, where do I start? Top50 Ranches - obviously. Instead of blindly tapping 'romantic dude ranch vacations' into Google and trawling through thousands of results, simply type 'romance' into the search box on the Top50 homepage and the very best romantic ranch retreats will appear.

So I've narrowed it down - where next? Now it's time to get to the specifics - and this is where a bit of research comes in handy. Find out (discretely, now) what kind of level a horseback rider she is. Although most ranches cater for all levels, if she's particularly keen or advanced and wouldn't mind getting stuck into real cowgirl stuff, you'll earn serious brownie points by taking her to a working ranch. Somewhere like Burnt Well Guest Ranch in New Mexico, or Zapata Ranch in Colorado where she'll get the opportunity to ride with bison. Trust us, it's neat.

I think she'd prefer pampering... That's fine! In which case, go for the ranches with 'luxury dude ranch' listed under their headings, as these are likely to have super-luxurious spa facilities. If she's a slave to the hot tub and won't step out the door without perfectly manicured nails, we'll bet she'll love the treatments and facilities offered by the likes of Canada guest ranch Echo Valley Ranch and Spa, and Montana dude ranches The Ranch at Rock Creek and The Resort at Paws Up.

Relax in the hot tub at Clayoquot Wilderness Resort

She's a die-hard romantic... Then you should definitely consider Triple Creek Ranch in Montana, which has been rated #1 for romance. Wine and dine her at the chef's table, enjoy candlelit dinners and moonlight strolls, and movies under the stars. You can even have your own private cabin, where you'll be welcomed with a bottle of wine and basket of goodies. You'll be in her good books with this one.

I'm actually thinking of proposing. Good work! In that case we recommend a suitably dramatic location in which to pop the question. There's nothing like a breathtaking view of the wilderness as a backdrop - trust us, she'll be bowled over and won't be able to say no. We recommend Rancho Los Banos in Mexico, Estancia Ranquilco in Argentina, and Canada dude ranches Siwash Lake Ranch and Clayoquot Wilderness Resort. And if you're really in a hurry to get that ring on her finger, Three Bars Ranch in Canada caters for weddings.

Well, we hope that's cleared up at least some of the confusion over Valentine's Day presents. And she deserves the best, right? Then sleep well knowing that all Top50 ranches have been personally and thoroughly vetted to ensure quality. That's our promise, now act out yours and book that romantic ranch vacation today!

Western ranch vacations combined with a spot of pampering - that's a 'Rope & Soak' at a Top50 ranch! From honeymoons to girlfriends’ getaways, Rope & Soak dude ranch vacations offer a great new way to take a western horseback riding holiday.

You got up at the crack of dawn for a hearty cowboy breakfast before going down to the barn to saddle your horse. You’ve been riding all day, moving cattle and taking in mile after mile of breathtaking scenery. Moseying back to the ranch at the end of a long day, you’re tired but content. Surely the only thing that could top off your day is a soothing massage and a long soak in a bubbling hot tub. On a Rope & Soak vacation at a Top50 ranch, you can do just that.

There’s no reason why getting the most authentic western ranch vacation can’t offer pampering and luxury too, a winning combination hailed by The Hideout ranch in Wyoming, USA. European-style pampering and luxury spa facilities run alongside unbeatable horseback riding with ample opportunity for cattle work on the 250,000 working cattle ranch.

Or head to Bonanza Creek ranch in Montana, USA, which offers a comprehensive range of massages, Reiki, yoga and hot tub facilities alongside regular pasture gathers. Another Montana guest ranch is Triple Creek, where guests can take part in cattle drives and even work with the ranch’s bison herd. After a day riding alongside real cowboys, Triple Creek’s pool, hot tub and spa treatments await, to soothe those aching muscles.

Cowgirls on ranch vacation

Not forgetting Echo Valley Ranch and Spa in British Columbia, Canada, with its spa facilities rivaling that of 5-star hotels. Echo Valley is ideally suited to less experienced horseback riders wishing to immerse themselves in western cowboy culture and be pampered to the max! A great ranch for non-riders and families, it has something for everyone in truly beautiful mountain surroundings.

...And pampering by night (photo taken at Echo Valley Ranch & Spa, BC, Canada)

The Ranch at Rock Creek in Montana, USA, offer the feel of the ‘true west’ without sacrificing true comfort. Here, ranch vacations are tailor-made to suit guest requirements, meaning as much or as little horseback riding and pampering as you wish. Guests can get their cowboy fix at the ranch’s weekly authentic rodeo, then rejuvenate at Rock Creek’s dedicated 5-room full spa service. This ranch screams luxury!

C Lazy U Ranch in Colorado, USA, has perhaps the most unique spa for a Rope & Soak vacation. Its outdoor setting suggests western authenticity and gives guests that feeling of reconnecting with nature. Housed inside year-round canvas tents complete with glass-bottom, hydronic-heated floors and furnishings made from the ranch’s very own wood, the spa boasts beautiful views across the creek. After an action-packed day of cattle gathering, this is perfect place to relax and unwind with a massage, facial, or C Lazy U’s signature ‘Cowboy Soak’ – a moonlit soak in old-fashioned, deep copper tubs overlooking the creek, complete with champagne and strawberries.

The Resort at Paws Up in Montana, USA, is the ideal choice for less experienced riders looking for an authentic western vacation with second-to-none spa facilities. The ranch offers arena-based lessons and cattle sorting, as well as pasture gathers for all riding levels. Those new-found riding muscles can be soothed at the Paws Up spa, which offers relaxation massage, deep-tissue massage, rock therapies and countless other spa treatments.

Whatever your requirements on your dude ranch vacation, Top50 Ranches has a ranch to meet your needs. Whether it’s horseback riding action, relaxation, family friendly, true luxury or a mixture of everything, you’ll find it on a Rope & Soak.

Owner of Tod Mountain Ranch appointed President of BCGRA

Tracey O’Connell, owner of Tod Mountain Guest Ranch was appointed President of the BC Guest Ranchers’ Association at their AGM on 17th November 2011 for a two-year term.

Tracey grew up in Dublin, Ireland, before moving with her family to Leeds, England, where she went to school and continued on to a career in Human Resources with international organizations in the UK, Europe and Asia. As busy as she was, she still would book horseback riding vacations around the world - a passion that she picked up in the 90’s when she visited her first dude ranch and has since taken her around the world from Crete to Botswana, Wyoming to Australia.

Although an admitted ‘city girl’, Tracey recalls sitting on a porch of a cabin in Alberta enjoying a beer with a friend after a long ride and saying, “I could do this!” That was about 10 years ago – a time when she was living life large: a Fortune 500 company job in human resources while based in Hong Kong living the good life – but her heart was now set on living a simpler life, surrounded by natural beauty, and making her dream of building and running a guest ranch a reality.  The question now was, where?

Visits to Western Canada quickly answered the question when she became ‘struck by the beauty of British Columbia’. A six month leave from the job to live in Canada just ‘to be sure’, cemented the dream. Within three months O’Connell had bought Tod Mountain Ranch, an 80-acre former cattle ranch in the Louis Creek Valley, close to Kamloops, and surrounded by beautiful crown land. The year was 2007, the same year she received a residency permit and immigrated to Canada. Intense construction began in 2008 and by June, 2009, she opened the ranch to her first guests and has never looked back. Able to host up to 16 people during a stay, she combines horses, adventure, personalized service, fun and relaxation into every guest’s stay.
